The IDF says it is working to establish a permanent military post in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, for the first time since the Oslo Accords in the 1990s.

Earlier today, during a scan conducted by troops in the area ahead of the establishment of the post, an explosive device detonated near soldiers, seriously wounding an officer and lightly injuring an NCO.

The move to establish the post marks the first time since the Oslo Accords that the IDF has sought to put a permanent military presence within Area A of the West Bank, which is supposed to be under full civil and security control of the Palestinian Authority.

The Jenin camp has been sealed off by the IDF since early 2025 amid a counter-terrorism operation.

The Haaretz daily reports that the military, in response to a petition against the displacement of tens of thousands of residents of the camp, says the post is “intended to replace the presence of forces in residents’ homes and regulate the deployment of forces in the area from a long-term perspective, as part of implementing the operational conditions for a safe exit from the camp.”
